Laker has for the second year running supported the Narthex Centre local Sparkhill Foodbank with a donation of goods. Laker provides repairs and maintenance services to a number of the communities in and around Sparkhill as part of our partnership with Friendship Care & Housing, so we were keen to get involved with such a community minded charity.
The Sparkhill food bank project addresses the needs of the most vulnerable within the community including people placed in sudden financial crisis due to change in personal circumstances leading to financial hardship and in some case destitution or homelessness.
The food bank provides a temporary, practical stopgap giving a minimum of 3 days emergency food supply until welfare benefits are paid. The project is also a catalyst for helping individuals by supporting them through other issues such as debt and housing matters, helping break the long-term cycle of poverty, isolation, deprivation, lack of opportunity, poor diet and health problems.
